Washed Arabica
The red volcanic laterite soil of Mt. Elgon provides ideal coffee growing conditions. Mt. Elgon is the oldest and largest solitary volcano in East Africa, covering an area of 3500 square km. The mountain is split between two countries, Uganda and Kenya. The area around the mountain is protected by two Mt. Elgon National parks providing the protection of the old growth forest canopy that is used to grow high quality shade grown high elevation coffee.
Gumutindo local family farmers have formed a society to help bring their coffee to market. The society travels to each farm to educate them about producing higher quality coffee. They have just bought a warehouse with a ventilated roof so the coffee can be stored in ideal conditions before processing. It really is a great story to see a group of farmers coming together into a "Village" in unity to bring up the quality of coffee and in turn to create finances that will raise their standard of living.
Shade grown SL14 and SL28 varietals are lovingly cared for, each tree is regularly pruned and weeded. No pesticides are used. Trees are mulched with composted organic matter to improve the quality of the coffee. Hand picked cherries are done by each family when perfectly ripe. Hand sorted and graded Gumutindo is true quality at a value price.
